| Abstract: | Researchers have identified, but not quantified, the economic value of drivers like sense of place (SOP) on perceptions related to wolf reintroduction, such as fair compensation for livestock losses. In this study, we utilize exploratory factor analysis and a choice experiment to investigate how SOP dimensions, like place attachment, place dependence, and economic dependence, affect willingness to pay (WTP) for sustainable wolf populations or perceived fair compensation in Colorado, where wolves were reintroduced in December 2023. By knowing how WTP is influenced by the building blocks of SOP, we can determine how SOP would be altered by the presence of wolves, and how different residents might react. For example, our research shows that those who find wolves as contributing positively to SOP would pay for more livestock loss compensation programs, thus creating opportunities to reallocate resources to those whose SOP was diminished because of economic dependence on agricultural production.
