Abstract: This study examines the spatiotemporal dynamics of the Karankadu mangrove swamp from 1994 to 2024 using supervised classification of Landsat imagery. As a GIS-based investigation, it highlights the ecological and economic significance of this mangrove ecosystem, which plays a vital role in carbon sequestration and coastal protection despite its limited area and biodiversity. However, the Karankadu mangrove swamp faces severe threats, resulting in the deterioration of natural habitats and the diminishment of critical ecological benefits. The study analyses the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) and Land Surface Temperature (LST) derived from MODIS sensor, which were processed using the Google Earth Engine to assess these changes during the period of 2000 to 2024. The results reveal that there is a significant mangrove cover decline and changes in NDVI and LST in this location. Rather than this, a statistically significant contrary trend between NDVI and LST indicates that variation may contribute to mangrove depletion. This study underscores the urgent need for multi-faceted protection measures aimed at reversing the current trend of habitat loss and sustain the critical functions of the Karankadu mangrove ecosystem.
