| Abstract: | In the spring and summer of 1994, the New York State and the Suffolk County health departments conducted a Water quality studs' of bathing beaches in the county. The purpose of the study was to compare the total-and fecal-coliform bacterial standards (currently used to evaluate bathing-water quality) to a proposed enterococcus standard. Analysis of the data revealed that, although the enterococcus values correlated well with total- and fecal-coliform values, the enterococcus standard would result in increased beach closures.
