Abstract: This study tested selected bacterial, physical, and chemical parameters at Avery Park and Monteith Park, two popular natural swimming areas in western Oregon. Samples were collected over a nine-week period from June 28 to August 31,1996. Although the physical and chemical parameters were at acceptable levels throughout the summer, bacterial levels often varied by several degrees of magnitude. At Avery Park, bacterial levels exceeded the existing state and federal limits for fecal coliform during 21 percent of the sampling period and for Escherichia coli (E. coli) during 11 percent of the sampling period. At Monteith Park, regulatory limits for fecal coliform were exceeded during 79 percent of the sampling period, and E, coli limits were exceeded during 42 percent of the sampling period. The 30-day log means of these values, however, were elevated only for fecal coliform--and only at Monteith Park. The authors recommend that further testing be conducted at Monteith Park to determine the cause of the elevated bacterial levels, as no single parameter was highly correlated with the bacterial counts.
