Abstract: The aim of this study was to develop a new method to characterize the granulometry of actinide oxides collected in the workplace during the fabrication of MOX nuclear fuel according to the MIMAS process. The samples analysed were filters from the devices continuously collecting aerosols. The method is based on an autoradiographic analysis combined with an electron microscopy study. We report here the results obtained after pilot autoradiography experiments. After contact autoradiography (solid track detector CR39) particles containing a emitters were visualized as spots and localized on the filter. The activity of each spot was then measured by track counting after the optimal exposure time to obtain 30-300 tracks/spot. Particles from a few µBq to a few Bq were encountered. Assuming particles were industrial PuO2, activity median aerodynamic diameters calculated for four filters containing 131-500 spots were in the range 3.5-7.1 µm, with a geometric standard deviation of 1.6-1.7 µm. These values are similar to those measured in the workplace after using specific devices for granulometric measurement. Electron microscopy studies are in progress to validate the autoradiographic method and to characterize complex aerosols (UO2/PuO2 aggregates, MOX, etc.). [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
