Abstract: A special purpose method is presented for the static stress analysis of a composite bonded/bolted single-lap joint. The proposed formulation takes into account nonlinear adhesive constitutive behavior, contact, bolt-hole clearance and bolt clamp-up. Good computational efficiency is achieved through use of efficient kinematic models to represent the various joint components. The model solution is based on the principle of virtual work, with meshfree Radial Point Interpolating Functions used to approximate the unknown field functions. In order to predict joint failure, the maximum strain criterion and point stress criterion are proposed for use with the model. The model capability is validated by comparison with more detailed finite element analysis and experimental measurements. Finally, a case study comparing the stresses and strengths of a set of bonded, bolted and bonded/bolted joints is also presented. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
