Title: Ghosts in the Genome.
Authors: RANDO, OLIVER J.1
Source: Scientist. Dec2015, Vol. 29 Issue 12, p46-52. 7p.
Subjects: Epigenetics, Position effect (Genetics), Gene expression, Metabolism, Gene expression profiling, Genetics
Abstract: The article attempts to understand the mechanisms of epigenetic influence and generate evidence on the influence of the experiences of ancestral population on future generations. Exampes of multigenerational epigenetic inheritance during cellular division are presented including the paramutation in maize and the prion states of budding yeast. It also discusses studies that document the link between ancestral environmental conditions and changes in offspring behavior or metabolism.
