Abstract: The article focuses on the creating system infrastructure for the development and use of multimedia applications. Three concerns are recognized to develop system infrastructure. The first concern is to understand and overcome the historical sources of complexity in telecommunications control software. The second concern is new sources of complexity that will affect network providers in the future telecommunications environment. The final concern is how to isolate the application development from the complexities and details of establishing and modifying multimedia communication sessions. Application Programming Interface facilitates application design, implementation, deployment and operation. The Touring Machine system provides a set of logical abstractions for specifying the transport topology of a communication session. The relationship between application software and the Touring Machine infrastructure is of client server type.
