Five base densities of <f>D2</f> in the range 12–20 amagat and several total gas densities of the mixtures up to 130 amagat were used. The observed spectra show the usual characteristic dip near the band origin <f>Q1(0)</f> of the <f>Q</f> branch with two well-resolved components <f>QP</f> and <f>QR</f> as well as the absorption peaks <f>O1(3)</f>, <f>O1(2)</f> and <f>S1(J)</f>, <f>J=0</f> to 4. Binary and ternary absorption coefficients of the band arising from collisions of the type <f>D2</f>–X and <f>D2</f>–X–X, where X stands for <f>N2</f> or CO, have been determined. The spectra are interpreted in terms of the overlap transitions <f>Qov(J)</f>, <f>J=0</f> to 4 and the following quadrupolar transitions of <f>D2</f>–<f>N2</f> and <f>D2</f>–CO: <f>O1(J)(D2)+Q0(J)(N2/CO)</f>; <f>Q1(J)(D2)+Q0(J)(N2/CO)</f>; <f>S1(J)(D2)+Q0(J)(N2/CO)</f> and <f>Q1(J)(D2)+S0(J)(N2/CO)</f> with <f>J=0</f> to 4 for <f>D2</f> and <f>J=0</f> to 25 for <f>N2/CO</f>. An analysis of the absorption profiles was carried out by assuming appropriate line shape functions for the short-range overlap and for long-range quadrupolar contributions. Characteristic half-width parameters <f>δd</f> and <f>δc</f> for the overlap-induced transitions and <f>δq</f> for the quadrupole-induced transitions were obtained from the profile analysis. Although CO has a small permanent electric dipole moment, present analysis does not indicate any detectable contribution from the electric dipolar induction mechanism in <f>D2</f>–CO mixtures.
