| Abstract: | Since its founding in 1984, the I Journal of Product Innovation Management i ( I JPIM i ) has published leading edge research on a number of important topics in the innovation domain, such as improving the new product development process (e.g., Cooper, [12]; Cooper and Kleinschmidt, [14]; Herstatt and von Hippel, [33]) and identifying the drivers of innovation success (e.g., Faems, Van Looy, and Debackere, [22]; Kleinschmidt and Cooper, [43]; Montoya-Weiss and Calantone, [59]). Beyond the value of additional case studies, innovation scholars can also broaden the scope of open innovation research by examining the social networks that underlie this form of innovation. Thus, theoretical perspectives that capture these broader concerns, such as social movement theory (Buechler, [6]), and the responsible innovation framework (Stilgoe et al., [79]) may help product innovation scholars expand their theoretical lens beyond the firm. In particular, the results of our multi-method investigation identified four key emerging themes: (1) I Role of new technologies on innovation, i (2) I Nature of socially responsible innovation i , (3) I Alternative means of organizing innovation activities i , and (4) I Need for a new theory of innovation for our new environment i . What role can non firm-centric theories (e.g., social movement theory, responsible innovation framework) play in enriching our conceptualization of product innovation management?.
