| Abstract: | Pesticide residues in citrus fruits (peeled grapefruit, lemon, orange and mandarin) and vegetables (cucumber, eggplant, tomato and zucchini) cultivated at three locations in the Jordan Valley were analyzed by liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectroscopy (LC-MS/MS). The fruits were cultivated at one location, while the vegetables were from the other two locations. Chlorothalonil and daminozide were detected in most of the citrus fruit samples. Their average concentrations in grapefruit, lemon, orange and mandarin exceeded maximum residue limits (MRL). Daminozide in cucumber, eggplant and tomato also exceeded the MRL, while chlorothalonil was found in relatively high levels approaching MRL in cucumber, eggplant, tomato and in zucchini. Several other pesticides, including bensulfuron-methyl and demeton-S-methyl-sulfoxide, exceeded the MRL in some of the fruits and vegetables. Chlorothalonil, daminozide and other pesticides were present in relatively high levels in the irrigation water and soil at each cultivation site. These findings indicate the need for adequate training and regular inspections and monitoring of pesticides such as chlorothalonil and daminozide in irrigation water and fresh produce in order to protect public health. Practical Application: Several pesticides including chlorothalonil and daminozide exceeded MRL in the citrus fruits and vegetables and were found in high levels in the irrigation water and soils. The findings underscore the need for adequate training and enforcement of good agricultural practices in the region considered. Regular inspections and effective monitoring programs of pesticides in irrigation water and fresh produce are also warranted to protect public health. • Chlorothalonil exceeded the MRL in all the citrus fruits and approached MRL in the vegetables. • Daminozide levels in citrus fruits were lower than for chlorothalonil but exceeded the MRL. • Daminozide levels in cucumber, eggplant and tomato exceeded the MRL. • Several other pesticides exceeded MRL in the fruits and vegetables. • Chlorothalonil and daminozide were present in high levels in the irrigation water and soils.
