Abstract: Examines new research into the biology of joy. Scientific community which is well versed in depression which is now looking at the parts of the nervous system where positive emotions are embodied; The work of Richard Davidson which showed that happiness isn't a vague feeling but a physical state of the brain; Finding that people who rate in the upper reaches of happiness on tests, develop about 50% more antibodies than average; Discovery of brain activity in the left prefrontal cortex when the subject is happy; Questions raised by the finding; Belief of Davidson that dopamine levels may be important in certain kinds of happiness; Work of researcher Brian Knutson who is studying the happiness of looking forward to something; Other studies on optimism, on how positive emotions influence the workings of the body and on curiosity; Research which shows the power of thankfulness. INSET: Is happiness wired in from the beginning?.
