Abstract: The article reports on the understanding and assessing of bibliometrics as a method of measuring interdisciplinarity. Bibliometrics is both a scientific method for analyzing the internal dynamics of science and an evaluative technique for assessing the performance research laboratories, departments, universities, or nation states. Indeed, linking bibliometrics and visualization into maps appears to be a spreading evaluative technique among the U.S. federal agencies. There are cautionary comments about the limits of bibliometrics and the potential for their misuse and a caveat that they should not be used as a stand-alone tool, rather, bibliometrics is always to serve as a support to peer review assessment.
