Abstract: This article discusses various issues related to multiprogramming and multiprocessing. To maximize utilization of the resource and minimize throughput for users, multiprocessors must be multi-programmed, just like the large main-frame computers of the past. This expectation of multiprogramming of multiprocessors is further exacerbated by architectural trends. In particular, one can expect current and near future multiprocessors to be constructed using networks of workstations, wherein high-performance workstations are connected by a high-speed interconnection network. The problem of multiprogramming a multiprocessor among competing applications, which may include sequential, parallel, and even distributed programs, is a subject of on-going research.
