Abstract: A unitised regenerative proton exchange membrane fuel cell (URPEMFC) is capable of performing the functions of both discrete fuel cells and water electrolysers in one unitised system. This manuscript reviews the publications on the dynamic responses of URPEMFC during operational and transient states. The amplified sensitivity of this system has been a critical subject due to its additional functions. Literature analysis is done to understand the parametric responses toward cell durability and performance during operational and transient states. URPEMFC suffers mainly from water-related issues that cause start-up failures due to water flooding and/or membrane dehydration. A low start-up current density and/or gas purging method are typically adopted as countermeasures. Both modes increase cell temperature, regardless of the cold water supply during electrolysis. Additionally, local hotspots originate from an uneven water distribution. Hence, metallic-based electrodes are often used due to their high conductivity. Overall, this review determines the gap in the studies of water and temperature management of a URPEMFC. • Operational and transient dynamic responses of the cell. • Water and temperature management and distribution during mode change and operation. • Optimisation method for WE mode operation and FC mode start-up.
