Abstract: Current technological breakthroughs in the areas of digital computers and electronics and the increase in the use of automated work systems mean increased mental demands and fatigue for a large segment of the workforce. In order to determine relationships between worker mental output (performance) and the resulting fatigue, a five hour laboratory experiment was conducted. The experiment was run under two types of working conditions (Rest/ No Rest). The performance measures of interest were work output, heart rate and brain wave activity. The results supported the notion of performance deterioration due to mental fatigue. In addition, the results showed a significant difference between output for rest versus no rest task conditions.
