Abstract: Radiation oncology residents frequently face urgent or emergency calls, requiring a systematic triage and management approach. Recognizing prevalent concerns and knowledge gaps among residents can aid in creating resources to address these needs. One limitation during medical school is the lack of comprehensive education in radiation oncology, leaving new PGY2s uncertain about handling emergencies while on call. Therefore, there is a pressing need for a project or handbook aimed at enhancing resident education confidence during on-call duty and potentially improving patient care. An internal working group of radiation oncology residents surveyed typical calls and pinpointed areas necessitating further assistance in triaging patient concerns. To tackle these needs comprehensively, a multi-pronged educational strategy will be devised. This strategy encompasses the creation of a handbook as a reference tool for residents, organizing webinars featuring faculty experts who will discuss approaches to common complaints, and embedding educational materials into the curriculum. Additionally, semi-structured interviews and qualitative data analysis will be employed to gather insights from residents regarding their experiences and educational requirements. The handbook will cover medications, emergency protocols, and approaches to different chief complaints. Webinars provided practical insights from experienced faculty, enhancing residents' understanding of patient management strategies. Integrating educational materials into the curriculum facilitated ongoing learning and reinforcement of critical concepts. Forming an internal working group to assess standard calls and educational needs proved instrumental in developing adequate resources for radiation oncology residents. The combination of a handbook, webinars, and curriculum integration offers a comprehensive educational approach to residents on managing patient phone calls and emergencies, ultimately enhancing patient care and resident training.
