Abstract: This article details the history of database management. The author, Donald Chamberlin, starts with the evolution of digital data management including Charles Bachman’s Integrated Data Store as well as the author’s own contributions to the field. Topics include E.F. Codd’s relational data model and its continued influence on the field as well as the development and current use of SEQUEL, SQL, the query language. Also discussed is the current database management movement known as NoSQL.
