Abstract: This work has proposed a minimum switch single-phase nine-level inverter with a new modified carrier pulse width modulation approach. The proposed arrangement delivers a high amount of resultant voltage levels by using a lesser amount of switching devices and ternary sequence DC sources. Furthermore, to improve the quality of resultant voltage and enhance the harmonic spectrum, a newly modified carrier pulse width modulation (PWM) approach is suggested. The suggested design can easily be extended by using a series connection. To prove the better effectiveness of the proposed inverter configuration, a comprehensive comparison with the other nine-level configurations in terms of the required number of sources, switches, capacitors, diodes and conducting switches is performed. The effectiveness and feasibility of the new multilevel inverter structure using the proposed PWM approach have been proven by using MATLAB simulation and prototype results. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
