Abstract: The advancement of mining equipment usually leads to improved performance, but on the other hand it can cause an increase in the amount of dust, explosive and toxic gases emitted into the atmosphere of the working area by destructing rock mass. Thus, the problem of implementing the effective auxiliary ventilation system is critical to ensure the health and safety of the working area. One of the promising ways to improve the efficiency of ventilation of dusty blind headings of potash mines is the usage of exhaust ventilation. The main advantage of exhaust ventilation is that harmful impurities can be immediately removed from the mine, however it is known to generate less intensive airflow that potentially can increase local values of emitted gases concentration at some arias. The present study deals with the dynamics of methane in a blind heading with an operating borer miner, since this issue should be analyzed especially carefully when introducing an exhaust ventilation system, while the dust factor was considered earlier. Another important circumstance that has not been studied in the literature is the effect of the borer miner on heat and mass transfer processes. The numerical model for the transfer of methane–air mixture in a blind heading was formulated, taking into account the effect of the operating borer miner heat. The model was parameterized using data from field studies at a potash mine. Numerical simulation made it possible to determine the regularities of the distribution of the methane cloud near the roof of the heading for various parameters of ventilation system and blind heading. The simulation results revealed a significant influence of the heat released by the borer miner on the distributions of the velocity field and the concentration of the methane–air mixture in the heading. • We studied the exhaust ventilation of a blind heading with operating borer miner. • Actual borer miner geometry and parameters of its cooling system are considered. • Heat emissions from the borer miner greatly affect the distribution of methane. • Thermal convection stops affecting ventilation when airflow exceeds 3.5–4 m3/s.
