Abstract: This study conducts a perceptual noise analysis of urban air mobility (UAM) vertical take-off and landing (VTOL) vehicles using the concept of partial loudness, considering the masking effects of background noise. The noise prediction for UAM VTOL is performed using the comprehensive multirotor noise assessment (CONA) framework, followed by loudness calculations based on Moore's model. The study examines the loudness of UAM VTOL noise in the presence and absence of background noise, conducts a frequency-specific loudness analysis, and evaluates the effectiveness of noise reduction methods through perceived noise analysis. The results show that the loudness of UAM VTOL noise is dominated by broad-band noise in the 2–5 kHz band. The study also finds that comparing perceived noise levels is more accurate than comparing physical noise levels when evaluating noise reduction strategies. These findings highlight the importance of integrating perceptual noise analysis into UAM noise reduction efforts. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
