Abstract: The detection of Anabolic Androgenic Steroids (AAS) has become a constant concern in sports and health due to the misuse of these hormones. Given this scenario, rapid, sensitive, and low-cost detection of these compounds has become a priority. In this study, a Pyrolytic Graphite Electrode (PGE) was modified with multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs), which were dispersed in the gum of Amburana cearensis (GAmb), a polysaccharide obtained from a plant native to northeastern Brazil. Subsequently, PGE/MWCNTs-GAmb was used as a substrate for the electrosynthesis of Poly(Alizarin Red S) (PARS), whose electrochemical processes interact with high affinity with AAS, such as Testosterone (T), Testosterone Propionate (TP) and Oxandrolone (OXA). The prior modification of PGE by MWCNTs-GAmb generated more active sites for PARS formation than direct electropolymerization in PGE, ensuring greater polymer formation and better electrochemical behavior. After extensive electrochemical characterization, the PGE/MWCNTs-GAmb/PARS system was proposed as a sensor for AAS detection. Thus, T, TP, and OXA were detected in both artificial and human urine, with recovery levels close to 100% by the standard addition method. The detection (LOD) and quantification (LOQ) limits for these AAS were estimated at an average of ≅ 0.275 μg L−1 and ≅ 0.916 μg L−1, respectively. Although the system does not differ among AAS, the sensor is an excellent candidate for primary screening of possible doping before sports competitions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
