Abstract: This study focused on the synthesis and characterization of tin-exchanged heteropolytungstate (SnxTPA) catalysts, which were tested for their efficacy in acetylation of glycerol with acetic acid. The SnxTPA catalysts showed significantly enhanced activity compared to the original TPA catalyst, especially for glycerol acetin synthesis. The catalytic performance was strongly correlated with the degree of tin exchange with heteropolytungstate protons. Partially exchanged Sn1TPA catalyst showed the highest activity owing to variations in acidity. Surface and structural properties of SnxTPA catalysts were found to influence their catalytic activities. Acetylation of glycerol to biofuel additives is achieved using heteropoly tungstate exchange on tin solid catalyst. The role of catalysts and both Bronsted and Lewis acidity on glycerol acetylation was demonstrated. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
