Abstract: To verify the stereotype that basalt containing olivine is unrecommended for continuous fiber production, detailed case studies on the devitrification and fibration performances of glasses from olivine-added basalt were conducted. A typical basalt sample was adopted as the initial material, to whom different proportions of olivine (from 0 to 25 wt%) were mixed. The crystalline state, polymeric level, exothermic behavior, and fibration performance of the glasses/melts were discussed. The water-quenched glasses from melts at 1500 °C exhibited X-ray amorphous state even after 25 wt% of olivine added into the basalt. Analysis on the annealed glasses under elevated temperature indicated that olivine addition did not change the major crystalline types (pyroxene and feldspar), but increased their devitrification temperatures. A proper olivine ratio widened the fibration temperature interval (from 160 to 200 °C), and importantly, no direct relationship between the devitrification and drawing temperatures was established. Input of olivine adjusted the structural as well as viscous properties of silicate melts by generating more low-polymeric silicate units, which affected both the fibration behavior and fiber performance. In this view, logarithmic values of fiber diameter and the reciprocal of temperature were derived and proved as linear correlations. Present work proposes a viewpoint that it is an acceptable way to use special mineral, such as olivine, to adjust the suitable bulk composition of silicate system for continuous fiber production.
