Abstract: The features of complexation of the styryl dye 4-{(E)-2-[4-(dimethylamino)phenyl]vinyl}-1-methylpyridinium iodide (DASPI) in an aqueous solution of cucurbit[7]uril (CB7) have been studied using steady-state and time-resolved fluorescence spectroscopy. It has been found that the formation of 1 : 2 inclusion complexes causes significant changes in the absorption spectra and stimulates emission from a higher excited electronic state in the 400 nm band. Using fluorescence titration in this band, the binding constants have been determined as log K1 = 5.5 and log K2 = 5.1 for the 1 : 1 and 1 : 2 DASPI–CB7 inclusion complexes, respectively. These changes can be attributed to the influence of the electrostatic field of the CB7 portals on the conjugated system of DASPI double bonds. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
