As the most widely used foundation type in offshore wind farms, the stability of monopile foundations is crucial. Monopile scour, one of the main factors threatening the safe operation of wind turbines, has become a major research focus. On-site scour monitoring technology is a key tool for studying its catastrophic mechanism and providing early warnings of monopile instability. However, existing scour monitoring technologies face challenges in achieving efficient, accurate, and long-term monitoring. This paper proposed a self-sensing method for monopile scour based on ultra-weak Fiber Bragg Grating (UWFBG) sensing technology. The distributed strain data from the monopile are captured by the optical sensing cable, and the scour around the monopile is assessed by analyzing the strain distribution characteristics. The proposed method is validated through application to a wind farm located in the Bohai Sea, China. The results demonstrate that this method enables self-sensing of the monopile scour depth, and the scour-prone depth can be determined by analyzing the evolution of the strain curve. • A self-sensing method for monopile scour monitoring based on UWFBG is proposed. • The method enables efficient, accurate, and long-term monitoring of monopile scour. • The erosion-prone areas are identified by analyzing strain distribution characteristics. • Field validation was conducted at a wind farm in the Bohai Sea, China.
