Abstract: Silicate-based SiO 2 -Al 2 O 3 -CaO-MgO (SACM) glasses with varying Na 2 O content and additive oxides including ZrO 2 , TiO 2 , and P 2 O 5 were synthesized for solid oxide electrolyte cells (SOECs) operating at a low temperature of 650 °C. Structural and thermal characteristics were analyzed while varying the glass compositions to find a suitable sealing material with good adhesion to SOEC components, such as yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ) and metal interconnect (FC460). The glass transition temperature, coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE), and viscous flow at the sealing temperature of 750 °C were investigated. The adhesion characteristics were examined by joining YSZ and FC460 with the sealing glass. Among various additives such as ZrO 2 , TiO 2 , and P 2 O 5 , a high CTE and good adhesion properties were obtained for P 2 O 5 -added SACM glass sealants. Interaction between the glass and SOEC components was inspected by scanning electron microscope (SEM) after sealing and then aging at the operating temperature. Additionally, stability under thermal cycle and exposure to high temperature vapor atmosphere at 650 °C was also examined and discussed to demonstrate the practical feasibility of the present glass material for SOEC applications.
