Abstract: The article focuses on the complexities of interpreting colonisation metrics of arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungi in relation to their symbiotic functions with plants. It highlights that while the proportion of root length colonised by AM fungi is commonly used as a proxy for assessing the benefits of this symbiosis, the relationship between colonisation and plant outcomes, such as growth and nutrient uptake, is not straightforward and varies by species and context. The study found that total colonisation was significantly associated with increased plant phenolic responses across various crops, suggesting that these responses may be triggered by fungal presence rather than nutrient exchange. However, no significant relationships were observed between arbuscular colonisation and plant growth or phosphorus responses, indicating a need for careful interpretation of colonisation metrics in mycorrhizal research.
