Abstract: Ever-burgeoning electromagnetic pollution over the last decade primarily due to anthropogenic activities has necessitated research in the development of new electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding materials. As more and more IoT and wireless devices enter everyday lives of humans, there has arisen a need to replace legacy EMI shielding materials (metals, metal alloys) with new ones that are not only cost-effective but also light in weight. An imperceptible shift from metals and metal alloys is already happening with advent of polymeric composites as EMI shielding materials. In view of the same, the current study involves synthesis of polystyrene–copper metal dust composite prepared by solution mixing method for EMI shielding applications. The shielding effectiveness of composite is further enhanced by the addition of graphite and carbon nanofibers. By addition of graphite and carbon nanofibers, absorption-dominated shielding effectiveness of − 35 dB is achieved in spite of presence of copper dust which gives reflection-dominated shielding effectiveness. Fabricated composite is characterized using XRD and FTIR. Hardness of the composite is tested using D-Shore hardness tester. Dielectric study and EMI shielding measurement were done using vector network analyzer in X-band (8.2–12.4 GHz). [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
