| Abstract: |
When the streamlines of a transonic flow may be approximated by those of an incompressible one, the partial differential equation satisfied by the stream function may to first order be replaced by an ordinary differential one whose variable is the label of the streamlines. The last equation admits different representations by taking as main quantity the stream function, the density, or the velocity. Several important phenomena may be identified in this approximation: the transition from subsonic to supersonic flow when crossing the sonic line, the jump back to subsonic in a shock, and the dependence of these possibilities on the initial value of the density. General considerations are supplemented by the specific example of the hyperbolic nozzle. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] |
