| Abstract: | An automatic system for scanning the homogeneity of photomultiplier tubes (PMTs) response was developed, achieving 0.2 mm spatial resolution over a 3.6 × 3.2 cm2 area. Tests revealed global and structural non-homogeneity in compact PMTs (Hamamatsu R7600U-200, H11934-203) and non-homogeneity on the edges of round PMTs (Hamamatsu R9779, R331-05 and Philips XP2020Q). A significant inefficient spot on the XP2020Q was observed, which expanded after defocusing. Heat transfer studies showed square PMTs transfer heat to the photocathode, affecting liquid scintillation cocktail temperature, while round PMTs showed minimal heat exchange.
