Abstract: • A fiber-optic settling detection sensor based on FBG was proposed. • The FGB-based sensor was applied to a test site in Chongqing. • The detection error of sediment thickness is 0.17%. Sediment at the bottom of a borehole during grouted pile construction is one of the main factors affecting the bearing capacity of pile foundations. Accurate detection of sediment thickness is particularly important for evaluating pile bearing capacity. However, existing methods of sediment monitoring have a low detection accuracy, and efficient and accurate slag thickness detection techniques are lacking. To address these issues, this study proposes a fiber-optic settling detection sensor based on fiber Bragg grating (FBG: stands for Fiber Bragg Grating, which is a grating with a spatially periodic phase distribution formed within the fiber core.) sensing technology. The sudden change in the end resistance of the fiber-optic probe as it passes through a sediment layer creates a time difference, and fiber-optic displacement meters are used to determine the difference between the compression displacements during this period, which represents the thickness of the sediment. Indoor calibration and simulation of sediment testing were performed for the proposed fiber-optic settlement detection sensor applied to a test site in Chongqing, China, for sediment thickness detection. The results show that the fiber-optic sensor accurately discriminated between the sediment, silt, and holding layers. The sensor achieved accurate detection of sediment thickness with the maximum detection error is 0.17%, and good stability of the detection data. The fiber-optic detection method overcomes the error problem of the traditional manual detection method and provides a new method for the accurate inspection of sediment thickness.
