| Abstract: | The global pursuit of sustainable energy solutions has boosted, with hydrogen emerging as a key player in the hunt for clean and renewable energy sources. This comprehensive review explores the synergies between hydrogen energy and solar-driven hydrogen generation, offering insights into recent advancements, breakthroughs, and future prospects in this dynamic field. The review begins by establishing the context of hydrogen's significance in the energy landscape and delineates the objectives of the review. A thorough literature review sets the stage by encapsulating the recent progress of research, providing a panoramic view of the evolution of the field. The subsequent sections discuss the diverse methodologies of hydrogen production, including electrolysis, photobiological methods, and thermochemical processes, scrutinizing their efficiency, challenges, and recent innovations. The integration of solar energy into hydrogen production processes is then examined, with a focus on photovoltaics and concentrated solar power, elucidating their roles and exploring recent developments. The review further navigates the complexities of hydrogen storage and transportation technologies, underscoring their central role in realizing the full potential of hydrogen energy. The applications of hydrogen energy across diverse sectors, like fuel cells, industrial processes, and transportation, are discussed, showcasing the versatility and promise of hydrogen as a clean energy carrier. Addressing the challenges inherent in this burgeoning field, the review outlines technical, economic, and policy-related hurdles and proposes future research directions. Thus, the review synthesizes key findings, emphasizes the transformative potential of solar-powered hydrogen energy, and issues a call to action for continued exploration and innovation. This review acts as a blueprint for researchers, policymakers, and industry professionals, guiding them through the delicate landscape of solar-powered hydrogen energy and inspiring collaborative efforts towards a sustainable and resilient energy future. • Reviews integration of solar energy systems for sustainable hydrogen generation. • Summarizes electrolysis, photobiological, and thermochemical methods with key advances. • Highlights innovations in hydrogen storage and diverse clean-energy uses. • Identifies barriers and future directions for solar-driven hydrogen technologies.
