Mountain lions (Puma concolor) are an apex predator of the American Southwest. Their diet and prey selection has been studied extensively, but recorded observations of prey capture are uncommon. We report an adult male mountain lion attacking a collared peccary (i.e., javelina; Pecari tajacu) in the early morning hours in the Santa Catalina Mountains, Arizona. This event was captured via camera trap and may so far be the only video-documented encounter of its kind. By providing both a standard and reduced video framerate, we describe the behavioral tactics employed by the mountain lion during the attack. Popular among wildlife professionals and amateur naturalists alike, camera traps offer insightful glimpses into commonly occurring yet rarely witnessed events. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] |

El puma (Puma concolor) es un depredador tope en el suroeste de los Estados Unidos. La dieta y selección de presas del puma han sido extensamente estudiadas. Sin embargo, pocas veces se ha registrado la captura de presas en video. Aquí reportamos el ataque de un puma adulto a un pecarí de collar (i.e., pecarí; Pecari tajacu) durante la madrugada en las montañas de Santa Catalina, Arizona. El evento se capturó por medio de cámaras-trampa y puede ser el único encuentro documentado en video de este tipo. En velocidad estándar y en cámara lenta, describimos las tácticas conductuales empleadas por el puma durante el ataque. Las cámaras-trampa, populares entre profesionales de la vida silvestre y naturalistas aficionados, proveen vistazos que ilustran eventos comunes en la naturaleza pero raramente presenciados por humanos.
