Abstract (English): The origin and early evolution of the journal Ciencia del Suelo are presented. The article is divided into three sections corresponding to three stages: the situation of the Argentine Association of Soil Science (AACS) in the 1970s; the proposal for the creation of the journal Ciencia del Suelo in 1980 and the years of preparation of the project and finally, the launching of the journal and its first steps since 1983. Initial goals, support and opposition received, the first contributors, the transition through the AACS Bulletin, some anecdotes, initial funding, the first issues, and finally, the editorial change, are recalled. Abstract (Spanish): Se presenta el origen y la evolución inicial de Ciencia del Suelo. El artículo se dividió en tres etapas: la situación existente en la Asociación Argentina de la Ciencia del Suelo (AACS) en la década de 1970; la propuesta de la creación de Ciencia del Suelo, generada en 1980, y los años de preparación del proyecto y, finalmente, el inicio de la revista y sus primeros pasos a partir de 1983. Se rememoran los ambiciosos objetivos iniciales, el apoyo y la oposición recibida inicialmente, los primeros colaboradores, la transición a través del Boletín de la AACS, algunas anécdotas, la financiación inicial, los primeros números y finalmente, el recambio editorial.
