Abstract: Dysprosium (Dy) substituted R-type hexagonal ferrites with the formula SrZr 2 Fe 4-x Dy x O 11 (x = 0.00, 0.03, 0.06, and 0.09) were prepared via sol-gel auto-combustion method. The prepared hexaferrite samples have been sintered for 4 h at 900 °Cin a muffle furnace. The XRD investigation shows that the synthesized samples are pure R-type ferrite and have a single phase. The resulting values of lattice parameters (a and c) observed in the 5.929–5.892 nm and 13.507–13.361 nm ranges, respectively. Unit cell volume (Å3) reduced with substitution of Dy3+. The crystallite size (nm) of Dy3+ substituted R-type hexaferrites between 26 and 31 nm was calculated using Scherrer's formula. Tetrahedral and octahedral locations for hexaferrites showed specific iron-oxygen (Fe-O) absorption bands in FTIR spectra. Dielectric constant (εʹ), dielectric loss (εʺ), tangent loss (tan δ), ac conductivity (σ ac), and imaginary component of electric modulus (Mʺ) shows linear increase except for sample x = 0.06. The decrease in both real and imaginary parts of impedance with frequency is due to the increase in conductivity. A minimum reflection loss of −36.87 dB was observed for the sample x = 0.06. The peaks of XPS spectrum mode were observed in the range of 0–1400 eV. VSM studies represents the increase in saturation magnetization, remanence and coercivity under the effect of Dy ions. The increase is attributed to realignment of magnetic moments and enhancing crystallite size. The synthesized hexaferrites can be used in recording and storage devices, electrical parts, refrigerator magnets at GHz frequencies. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
