Abstract: This article focuses on a pilot study evaluating the use of a moving-bed biofilm reactor (MBBR) as a low-resource, decentralized pretreatment method to improve water quality in the Mula River in Pune, India, which is heavily polluted by untreated sewage. Over 72 days, the MBBR system consistently reduced biochemical oxygen demand (BOD), chemical oxygen demand (COD), ammonia, and algal biomass without chemical additives, demonstrating effective organic pollutant removal and biofilm development under variable influent conditions. The study suggests that integrating MBBR upstream of existing treatment infrastructure can decrease chemical usage, reduce clogging and maintenance, and enhance overall treatment reliability, with potential scalability for seasonal water quality fluctuations. This approach offers a cost-effective solution for managing urban river pollution and improving potable water safety in resource-limited settings. [Extracted from the article]
