| Abstract: | The impact of static magnetic field exposure (SMF) was assessed during the biological treatment of toxic toluene vapors. Two identical biofilters were operated, one in the presence of a 50 mT SMF, the other without. The treatment was first carried out with a continuous toluene inlet load of 60 g m−3h−1, then with discontinuous airflow. During steady-state operation under continuous toluene load, the presence of SMF improved the toluene removal by 23 %, achieving a significantly higher elimination capacity (EC). During the intermittent load, higher robustness regarding shutdowns was noted in the biofilter exposed, with a prompter recovery of removal efficiency (RE) after shutdowns (1.5 h vs.≈2.5 h). Although impacted by the discontinuous load operation, the EC remained significantly higher in the presence of a SMF (42.2 vs. 36.1 g m−3h−1). The SMF boosted biofilm formation during the startup, generating a 30 % higher biomass. The better toluene removal under the SMF could be linked with higher microbial activity, confirmed by higher CO 2 production. The observed consumption of extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) as an alternative carbon source during discontinuous toluene loads was reduced in the presence of a SMF. These results demonstrated that applying SMFs can be an environmentally friendly technology to enhance the performance of biofiltration. [Display omitted] • Exposure to a 50 mT magnetic field improved the biodegradation of toluene. • The biofilter recovery after shutdown periods was favored by the magnetic field. • Biofilm formation is quicker under a static magnetic field. • The static magnetic field triggered a higher microbial activity.
