Abstract: The in-situ particles have the advantages of pure interface, good bonding with the matrix and uniform particle distribution, which can significantly improve the mechanical properties of the matrix. These advantages make in-situ particle reinforced materials have broad prospects in engineering applications, especially in the field of high-performance composite materials. In this paper, a new in-situ reaction system, Al-Al(OH)3-K2ZrF6-KBF4, was designed. (ZrB2+ Al2O3)/6016Al composites were prepared by melt reaction method at 860 °C. The chemical reaction mechanism, microstructure and mechanical properties of the composites were studied. The results show ZrB2 particles and Al2O3 particles are mixed and distributed together. The shape of ZrB2 particles is primarily hexagonal, a small amount is quadrilateral, and the size is 300–400 nm. The shape of Al2O3 particles is spherical, and the size is 100–200 nm. The α-Al average grain size of 6016Al alloy was 171.1 μm, and (ZrB2+Al2O3) particles refined the α-Al average grain size of 6016Al alloy to 84.1 μm. (ZrB2+Al2O3) particles significantly enhanced the mechanical properties of the 6016Al alloy, which increased the hardness by 78.7%, the tensile strength and elongation by 33.3% and 45.9%, respectively, and the fracture mechanism was transformed from brittle cleavage fracture to microvoid coalescence ductile fracture.
