Abstract: The article focuses on practical improvements to a previously published portable pop-up spectroscope designed for classroom use. To prevent assembly errors caused by misorienting the symmetrical square diffraction grating, the author introduced a "poka-yoke" (mistake-proofing) modification by replacing it with an asymmetric rectangular grating, ensuring correct orientation. This change has eliminated grating-orientation errors in over 4,000 student uses and reduced material costs to about US$1 per unit with a 5-minute assembly time. The improved design enhances portability and shifts instructional focus from troubleshooting to experimental investigations, such as simulating protanopia (red–green color blindness) using RGB LED-illuminated Ishihara plates.
