| Abstract: | • Two NDI monomers with carbazole and triazine pendants were designed and synthesized. • Structures were confirmed by 1D and 2D NMR spectroscopy. • ROMP kinetics were monitored by ¹H NMR, showing distinct polymerization behavior. • Polymers showed tunable Mn (6.45–15.2 kDa) with narrow PDIs (1.04–1.67). • Optical properties and thermal properties Tg (98–156 °C) were tuned via monomer design. The kinetics, optical, and thermal properties of NDI based polymers synthesized via ROMP were systematically investigated. Two functional NDI monomers, CAH-NDI and DCT-NDI, were polymerized using Grubbs second generation catalyst. Real-time 1H NMR monitoring revealed distinct kinetic profiles: for P1, the norbornene double-bond signals disappeared within 20 min, with Mn increasing to 6.45 kDa at that time, whereas P2 polymerization was completed within 3 min, indicating higher monomer reactivity. GPC confirmed controlled molecular weight growth with PDIs ranging from 1.04 to 1.67. The polymers exhibited absorption maxima (λ max) between 375 and 435 nm and a glass transition temperature (Tg) range of 98 to 156 °C, depending on the backbone composition and side-chain substituents. These results demonstrate how monomer structure and composition govern ROMP kinetics, optical absorption, and thermal stability of NDI-based polymers. [Display omitted] [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] |
