Application programming interfaces have been released by companies responsible for developing online mapping to enable outside programmers build online services that tap into the company's own map programs. The U.S. Department of Defense was instrumental in introducing advanced mapping tools to average Web users when it launched satellites in the Global Positioning System back in 1978. Programmers who reverse-engineered Google Maps discovered that most of its interactive features relied on scripts written in JavaScript.
