Abstract: The article re-examines the special-purpose chess hardware that provided most of the computational power of Deep Blue, the first computer to defeat world chess champion Gary Kasparov in an official match in May 1997. The design alternatives that were made possible by technologies for similar tasks are explored. Deep Blue achieved the feat by using a combination of 480 special-purpose chess chips and a general-purpose supercomputer. The general architecture of Deep Blue is described. The block diagram for the chess chip is given.
