Abstract: With the acceleration of digital transformation in the engineering construction field, the potential and demand for BIM (building information modeling) applications in the construction industry are increasingly prominent. The existing literature identified the factors that affect the BIM capability maturity, yet the dynamic interactions of these factors have not been thoroughly explored. This study applies system dynamics (SD) to construct a BIM capability maturity model for construction projects and designs three types of simulation scenarios to reveal the dynamic evolution mechanism of BIM capability maturity. The results show that in the baseline scenario, BIM capability maturity shows a trend of continuous improvement, and information capability factor and personnel factor are the primary driving forces to promote the BIM capability maturity of construction projects at the present stage. The single improvement of organizational arrangement has the most significant effect on the BIM capability maturity of construction projects, followed by the application standard. The effect of the dual‐dimension effect on BIM capability maturity of construction projects is different, with the optimal effect achieved by simultaneously enhancing the input and control of organizational arrangement and application standard. The research findings further enrich the theoretical framework of BIM capability maturity and provide new practical insights for enhancing the BIM capability maturity of construction projects.
