Abstract: Accelerating the advancement of urban-rural integration (URI) is an important approach to achieving sustainable development in urban and rural areas. However, studies focusing on specific regions remain relatively limited in the existing literature. Based on panel data from nine prefecture-level cities in Fujian Province over the period 2000-2023, this study constructs an URI index and empirically examines the impact of URI on rural sustainable development (RSD) in Fujian Province. The results indicate that a higher level of URI significantly promotes RSD. The mechanism analysis reveals that the urban-rural income alignment (URIA) plays a partial mediating role in the effect of URI on RSD, whereas foreign direct investment (FDI) does not constitute a significant transmission channel. A series of robustness checks, conducted by replacing the core explanatory variable URI, confirm the robustness of the baseline regression results. Based on these findings, Fujian Province should formulate differentiated development strategies tailored to local conditions and accelerate the construction of URI, thereby promoting the sustainable development of rural areas.
