This study systematically investigates the influence of carbon fiber (CF) content (0-12 wt.%) on the mechanical and tribological properties of eco-friendly non-asbestos organic (NAO) brake pads. Five formulations with varying CF contents were prepared via hot-press molding, and their microstructure, hardness, flexural strength, and friction-wear behavior under both room-temperature (RT) and high-temperature (300 °C) conditions were characterized. The results indicate that CF content significantly affects the material properties. The sample with 6 wt.% CF exhibited optimal performance, achieving the lowest friction coefficient (0.37 at RT, 0.21 at 300 °C) and wear rate [3.14 × 10-4 mm3·/(N·m) at RT, 1.39 × 10−4 mm3·/(N·m) at 300 °C], along with the highest hardness (105.67 HRM) and flexural strength (14.16 MPa). Microstructural analysis revealed uniform fiber dispersion and strong fiber-matrix interfacial bonding at this content. Excessive CF (12 wt.%) led to fiber agglomeration, defects, and deteriorated properties. The study demonstrates that incorporating an appropriate amount of CF enhances the performance of NAO brake pads, providing valuable insights for designing high-performance and environmentally friendly braking materials.
