Abstract: This article focuses on the history, evolution, and current status of the ceramic engineering program at Missouri University of Science and Technology (Missouri S&T), established in 1926 as one of the earliest dedicated ceramic engineering departments in the United States. It details the institutional challenges overcome to found the program, its longstanding partnership with Missouri’s clay and refractories industries, and its role in advancing ceramic materials science through specialized education and research. Despite a nationwide decline in specialized ceramic engineering programs, Missouri S&T remains one of only two accredited programs in the U.S. as of 2025, offering a Bachelor of Science in Ceramic Engineering with six new emphasis areas aligned with contemporary industry and research needs.
