Abstract: This study explores the tribological performance of polyurethane (PU)-based coatings reinforced with polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) and carbon nanofibers (CNFs) for reducing friction and wear in mechanical components, such as bearings. Two types of composite coatings: PU/PTFE and PU/PTFE + CNF were developed with filler concentrations of 3, 5, and 7 wt%. PTFE acted as a solid lubricant, while CNFs served as a reinforcing agent. The nanofillers were characterized using x-ray diffraction (XRD), and coating morphology and elemental composition were examined using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy-dispersive x-ray spectroscopy (EDX). Mechanical properties were assessed through a nanoindentation hardness tester and a nanoscratch tester. The tribological behavior was evaluated using a reciprocating wear test under dry conditions at room temperature. Worn surfaces were analyzed using optical microscopy, SEM, and 2D/3D profilometry. Among all the coatings, the PU/PTFE + CNF composite containing 5 wt% CNFs exhibited the lowest coefficient of friction and wear rate, along with enhanced hardness, strong reinforcement, and improved elastic recovery. The coefficient of friction (COF) was reduced by 43.4, 31.4, and 25.4%, and the wear rate by 63, 62, and 47% at applied loads of 3, 5, and 10 N, respectively. The addition of CNFs also showed excellent scratch resistance and minimal deformation. The combined use of PTFE and CNFs significantly enhanced both lubricity and structural integrity, thereby improving overall wear resistance. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
