Abstract: This article focuses on a collaborative automation solution developed by Siemens, KUKA Robotics Corporation, and SYIL to integrate robotics into small to mid-sized machine shops. The system combines Siemens’ SINUMERIK 828D CNC control with KUKA robots and SYIL’s R1 machine-tending automation package, enabling simplified programming and operation through a single human-machine interface (HMI). This integration eliminates the need for separate robotic programming and control pendants, reducing start-up time and operator training while supporting lights-out manufacturing shifts. Designed for ease of use and affordability, the solution targets job shops lacking robotic automation by automating part handling tasks and improving productivity without major capital investment. The SYIL R1 system supports parts up to 3 kg, offers quick installation, and is suitable for high-mix, low-volume production environments. [Extracted from the article]
