Abstract: Nursing education emphasizes cultivating empathy and professional spirit, with communication skills as a core competency. The effectiveness of training students' communication skills often depends on the construction of the learning environment. Spherical Video-based Virtual Reality (SVVR) offers authentic experiences with low technical and financial barriers, while appropriate scaffolds can further support learners in organizing knowledge and analyzing complex problems. This study proposes a concept mapping-based inquiry communication framework (CM-SVVR) to enhance the SVVR learning environment. A quasi-experimental study was conducted in a university nursing training program, with one class (43 students) using CM-SVVR and another class (39 students) using a conventional SVVR framework (C-SVVR). Results showed that the experimental group outperformed the control group in communication skills, communication tendency, and self-efficacy, with no significant differences in cognitive load or sense of presence. Interviews further indicated that SVVR enhanced engagement, authenticity, and communication while reducing social anxiety, whereas CM-SVVR additionally deepened students' understanding of inquiry communication, improved communication, and boosted self-efficacy.
